One or our most consistently popular activities for local and international groups is our mosaic master class. This can be organised as a stand-alone activity for a small group or incorporated as part of a wider range of creative or traditional workshops during a large event or gala evening. We have also included mosaic making as part of team building activities with teams performing challenges to find or win the equipment and materials needed to create a large mosaic work.

We talked to local artist Katie Sabry about the enduring popularity of this ancient art form as well as her work and the classes she organises for groups.

Raw Cyprus Events: Katie, tell us about yourself first of all and how you came to be in Cyprus?

Katie Sabry: I’m a full time artist living and working from my combined home and studio, I’ve been painting since I was a little girl, I think I was about 6 when I decided that I  wanted to be an artist. Luckily both parents were artists, so I’d the right environment to thrive in. My mother was English and my father Cypriot, they met here, went to live and work in London until  I was born, and then returned to Cyprus with me as a 6 month old baby. So although I did spend quite a few years abroad, travelling, studying, this is home and has been since I came back permanently in 1986.

Raw Cyprus Events: Where do you draw inspiration from in your work?

Katie Sabry: Mostly nature, especially the sea, no two days are alike in terms of colour and texture. I love our landscapes, the light, the way the countryside changes from all the shades of yellow after the summer into dazzling greens after the first rains. More recently I’ve become very fascinated by natural colours in the Cypriot earth, collecting and sorting them for future projects.

Raw Cyprus Events: Why do you think that mosaic making is so popular as a masterclass idea?

Katie Sabry: the fact that it’s such an ancient artistic craft and can be seen in perfect condition at many locations in Cyprus. In order to enjoy making a mosaic for the first time you need no drawing or painting skills or background. Something very simple can look very beautiful. It’s also brilliant for concentration and spatial awareness, it’s quite mathematical.

Raw Cyprus Events: You have previously exhibited various works both here in Cyprus and internationally, do you have plans for any future exhibitions that we might see?

Katie Sabry: I’d like to organise a one day ‘pop up’ exhibition here in old town Limassol with other artists before Christmas. Outdoors so that we’re not restricted with the new rules, and in order to help many artists who are really struggling. I do have a large piece of work at a gallery in Scarborough in the north of England, unfortunately the exhibition has been postponed for the moment.
